Smallclothes

Some of my favourite items, as I have blogged before, are the small items of clothing which add a touch of personality, a bit of flavour, to an outfit. Cuffs, collars, hats...the things which can pull a great outfit together. Even when these items, modern or vintage, are unseen by the general public, they still manage to add something special to an ensemble...bright red lacy bra, garters, a navel ring, or my obsession, corsets.

I have been fascinated by the idea of smallclothes since I was a child. Maybe it started with the word, smallclothes, it is such an intimate word and there was an intimate item for every occasion; Sunday panties, good handkerchiefs, school socks...I never understood these ideas until I was much older and grew to appreciate how these small articles of clothing subtly influenced an outfit. Varying in quality and fanciness, these bits and pieces, foundation garments and quick touches, were pieces of great importance, so I was taught.

As I grew older panties, handkerchiefs, chemises, all these items make me think of linen and lace and hand-stitching. I think of washing them out at night in a basin, of hanging them out to dry. I think (and can smell...mmmmm) the linen water. I think of lovingly embroidered items, dried lavender, and rose petals. I think of skills passed along, generation to generation and I finally came to appreciate all those hours of learning fine stitching and embroidery.

I find it all so soothing and sensual.

I need to make this my Valentine's Day idea, bloomers, a cropped chemise maybe? Maybe something with an empire waist. Something with ribbons and frill, embroidered or Irish lace. Ooooo...Irish lace.

I know there shall be linen and lace and dried flowers. And red. Lots and lots of red...

Check out Jane Austen's World on Pinterest. Cool resource. Super cool.
