Knickers and Stockings

I have a bit of a lingerie obsession.

My obsession was born while studying Fashion Design, we spent a semester covering lingerie design, working with lace, silks, even velvet and leather. I was hooked.

I built my collection of lovely pieces throughout the years. Pieces from around the world with many of my favourites coming from trips to France and Italy. The pieces of my young adulthood, pieces bought for their inexpensiveness as much as for their look, soon gave way to pieces of infinitely better quality as I travelled and earned more disposable income.

Don't get me wrong, I have a strong appreciation for the saucy vixen stuff. I do like pin-up style.

Show me a teddy in cheetah or leopard print and I am head over heels, I just happen to have a soft spot when it comes to well made, high quality classic bras, panties, garters and stockings. Pieces which, when treated lovingly, will last and last and last.

A few years back my obsession was the impetus for my delving into the world of crochet (finally), I wanted to learn how to make bikinis and the like. This desire became the focus for my "Damn Everything, Sit Down and Finally Learn How To Do It" marathon-o-learning. It is during this time that I finally did learn Tunisian crochet, I just had to make Jennifer Hansen's cincher, Laced Corset. I just had to.

At any rate, there was a lovely pattern in Knitty a while back, Unmentionables, which I eagerly cast on but had to frog. No fault of the pattern, my sizing was waaaaay off and, if I am being honest, the yarn, though the right weight and lovely, was producing a heavier finished project than I would have liked.

I went all Kermit on it with the promise to recast on soon.

Tic, tic, tic...the sound of many moons going by.

I have now decided to do the math and work Unmentionables in a lighter weight yarn. A redder than red yarn to boot (Valentine's is on the horizon, after all).

The reddest of possibilities

After sorting through the stash (Ravelry makes this oh so much easier), I swatched the possibilities and this is what I've narrowed it down to...

What's redder than red!?

Estelle Baby Silk Lace - 3mm, 5sts x 8r; 4mm, 6sts x 10r,

Estelle Yarns Baby Silk Lace

Louet MerLin - 3mm, 6sts x 9r; 4mm, 5sts x 7r,

Louet MerLin Sport Weight

Americo Cotton Flamme - 4mm, 5sts x 7r,

Americo Original Cotton Flammé

And Rowan Luxury Cotton - 4mm, 5sts x 7r,

Rowan RYC Luxury Cotton

Damn it! I forgot the Laines du Nord Mulberry Silk. A great red. Hmmm. It'll have to be part of the trim. And what could be Valentine's Day sexier than red knickers with a lacy trim!?...

Red knickers, a garter (Lisa Hamblin's A Bit of Blue in black, of course) and Susan Crawford's Seamed Stockings.

Or, Mari Muinonen's Lace Stockings.

Oh yeah.
